Armoured loose tube optical fibre cables have been specifically designed for external applications. The inner loose tube cable is filled with water blocking thixotropic gel to prevent the ingress of water and a corrugated steel armor tape is longitudinally applied over the yarn with an overlap. Two rip cords are laid under the steel tape to facilitate the jacket removal. The cable is covered by a UV resistant, PE jacket. The construction provides protection from damage for direct burial or installation in open trays, troughing or around industrial premises. Bulk unterminated fibre optic cable is dispatched on reels ready for installation and termination with either a termination kit or "splice mate".
Multi-mode optical fibre has a higher "light-gathering" capacity than single-mode optical fiber. Its larger core size simplifies connections and also allows the use of lower-cost electronics such as LEDs and VCSELs which operate at the 89nm wavelength whereas single-mode fibers operate at 1310nm or 159nm and require more expensive laser sources.
Particularly suitable for short links in a low fibre count distribution network, including risers and lift shafts.
